Wiper Time

I got a call from Nick yesterday afternoon asking if I had any plans. I have not been out much over the past two weeks due to us adding a new covered deck, so I was ready for a break. We hit a local city lake that has been a hidden gem this year. Nick has put in the time to figure out the lake and it has paid off. I wasn’t able to get out of work until right at 5PM, so we were on a tight schedule. We planned on trolling for white bass and hopefully hook up on the occasional wiper. Nick motored us over to the spot and we barely got the lines in when the rods started banging. We probably caught 50-60 white bass and 20 wiper.

We also picked up several cats and walleye. It was a heck of a night. We were trolling around 2.5mph over a good break that came up to 7ft where the fish were stacked up. We were using a three way with a very small spinner on the top leg and a deep rattling thin fin on the bottom. We also had a couple bombers that were doing well. The shad color seemed to be the best.

It was a great night on the water with air temps at 75 degrees. Thanks Nick!

Hello, I’m new to fishing for wiper in the KC area. I dont have a boat, but would like to get into it. I hear shawnee mission park rents canoes and is stocked with wiper. Have you ever fished there? Any tips would be helpful!

      Hello David,

I have not fished SM lake for wipers but I have driven by it a few times. Let me ask around and see if I can find anything good for you. One good way to chase wipers is to throw a shad imitation crank bait off of a wind blow point if the wind is blowing into or directly accross the tip of the point. You can also do well fishing the face of the dam if the wind is blowing into it.

Let us know how you do if you get out.

Thanks for the help Nick! Went out this evening and pulled up to the main point where the wind was blowing right across it. Threw a rat l trap and and another old crankbait. No wiper, but got 3 big largemouths. Dont think there are many wiper in that lake.

      Sorry for the late reply.

BRUSH! Find any brush in the lake and put a minnow in it and hold on… Good luck
