We have been blessed with some unseasonably mild weather this holiday season which Jeff & I promptly took advantage of last Wednesday afternoon. With just a couple of hours to enjoy being on the water we ran over to nearby Hillsdale reservoir to see if the crappie were still hanging out on some deep water brush piles were we found them earlier in the week. The water temps are about 36 degrees right now and the crappie are schooled up around drop-offs and brush. If you can find the schools or some good cover, you can really catch some good fish this time of year.
Jeff quickly found our targeted brush pile and set his Minnkota ‘I-Pilot’ trolling motor to hold us over the spot and we started catching crappie right off the bat. Just like our previous trips, the crappie favored the chartreuse colored jigs, red/chart, orange/chart, etc. The bite continued steadily until dusk when the breeze died down, but we had two good hours on the water and came home with nearly two limits of tasty winter crappie!
