We made it out just about every weekend for early teal but so it’s been a bust for us on our duck ponds. The last weekend of the year started out clear and cool, it’s finally starting to feel like duck season in Kansas.
The difference with this morning was the fact that we actually had a few groups of teal fly over before LST, the first birds we have seen this year. After LST passed the birds didn’t fly until about 45 minutes later when we had one group of birds finally start working the pond, and what a group of blue wings it was. There where at least 65 birds in this group. They swung over the decoys 2 time without committing fully to the decoys but on the third pass the landing gear came out and the two of us each let 3 shots fly. The result was the first ducks of the season and 8 birds splashed down! That was worth the wait!
One of my favorite things I notices this morning was a shell stuck in a piece of brush from last year. It made all spring and summer.
